Open Source Is Best!

We promote Open Source  software solutions. Open Source is free of charge and does not include expensive or limiting licensing fees.

We do not recommend or build systems on Microsoft platforms, not just because of the well-publicized security issues, but primary because of the cost. Similarly, we do not build Java (JSP) or Cold Fusion websites. We strongly feel that proprietary solutions based on Windows or Java are over-priced, over-hyped, and fail to deliver on their promise.

We build in PHP , on MySQL  databases, and we strongly recommend obtaining advanced functionality cheaply by adopting, and if necessary modifying, existing Open Source solutions.

Our preferred Open Source CMS software is Joomla!™  - this site is built on Joomla!

You could have a similar site up and running in 24 hours for as little as AUD$600 !

Price breakdown is as follows:-

  • AUD$360 for Joomla! setup, configuration, menu creation and entry of up to 10 pages of your supplied text & pictures (includes Contact Us page), and
  • AUD$60 for your choice of a commercial Rockettheme template  (like the one this site uses), and
  • AUD$180 for 1 year's Web & Mail Hosting on our Servers on our Small Business 500MB/10GB plan .

What is Joomla!™ ?

Joomla!™  is one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management System (CMS) on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications.

Websites powered by Joomla!™ allow the website owner to maintain the website's contents without the need for specialized (or expensive) programming skills. Basically, if you can use a browser (like Camino, Firefox, Safari, or Explorer) and have the skills to operate a program like Microsoft Word, you can maintain a website built on Joomla!.

The software itself is free from the licensing expense that goes with most other highly functional, easy to use content management systems. As a business person you should appreciate how this all adds up: No licensing fees, plus the ability to control and maintain the content of the website yourself. Put another way, the ability to build and maintain a highly functional, flexible, modular website is now within the grasp of anyone.

The emergence of Joomla!™ (and similar Open Source CMS's) is truly a revolution in web technology. Firms like Interwoven, Broadvision, and of course Microsoft, have in the past dominated the CMS market with offerings that start at AUD $20,000 (plus plus PLUS)!

While there are no restrictions or special requirements, we prefer running Joomla!™ under Linux  with Apache , PHP and MySQL .

Joomla! v4.x Notice

Joomla! 4  is on the horizon.

What's new in Joomla! 4?

Some of the changes in Joomla! 4 will require small changes to extensions.

For a complete list of known backward compatibility issues for version 4.0, please see Potential backward compatibility issues in Joomla! 4.0  in the documentation site.

All Joomla! clients are advised to ensure that all components and extensions they are running are being maintained by the developer and any discontinued components and extensions should be replaced with new alternatives that are being regularly maintained!

Joomla! v1.5 Notice

Support for Joomla! v1.5 ended in April 2012 but was continued unofficially until the end of 2012 for medium to high priority security issues.

Joomla’s developers will not be releasing new versions for Joomla! v1.5, so you won’t be getting bug fixes or security fixes.

For this reason, it’s recommended you migrate from v1.5.26 to Joomla! v3.x ASAP.

From 31 December 2012, we will not be allowing any new Joomla! v1.5.x websites on our servers as it poses too great a security risk!

Joomla! v2.5 Notice

Joomla 2.5 hit it's end-of-life  (EOL) on 31 December 2014.

The last version of the Joomla! 2.5.x series was v2.5.28.

Starting in June 2015, the Joomla! Extensions Directory™  will begin phasing out 2.5 extensions.

As Joomla! planned back in April 2012 , the Joomla! Extensions Directory™  will list Joomla versions for six months after the announced EOL of Long Term Support (LTS) versions.

So, all clients running joomla! v2.5.x websites should upgrade to the latest Joomla! v3.x ASAP .

From 31 December 2016, we will not be allowing any new Joomla! v2.5.x websites on our servers as it poses too great a security risk!
